Why Fall Is the Smart Time for an A/C Tune-Up in Central Florida

In Central Florida, your air conditioner does not get much of a break. After running hard from April through October, most systems have logged more hours than a northern unit does in two or three years. Fall, when the weather finally eases up, is the best time to have a pro look it over.

Why fall beats waiting for spring

  • Technicians are less busy, so scheduling is easier and visits are less rushed.
  • Problems found now can be fixed before next summer’s heat, when a breakdown is most uncomfortable.
  • Cooler days mean you can go without A/C for a few hours if a repair is needed.

What a good tune-up should include

A thorough visit is more than a quick look at the thermostat. Ask your technician whether the visit covers:

  • Cleaning or checking the condenser coil outside
  • Clearing the condensate drain line, a common source of leaks and water damage in humid Florida homes
  • Checking refrigerant levels and looking for signs of leaks
  • Testing capacitors, contactors and electrical connections
  • Inspecting the blower, belts and air filter
  • Measuring the temperature drop across the system to confirm it is cooling properly

Simple things you can do yourself

Between visits, change or clean your air filter every one to three months. Keep plants, mulch and debris at least two feet away from the outdoor unit. Pour a cup of white vinegar into the condensate line access every few months if your system has one, which helps prevent algae clogs.

Signs you should not wait

If your system is short-cycling, making new noises, leaking water, or your electric bill jumped without explanation, schedule service now rather than waiting. These are often early signs of a failing part.

A fall tune-up is a small cost compared with an emergency replacement in August. A licensed Florida A/C contractor can tell you where your system stands and what to plan for.
